Band Camp At Miles College

miles_camp.jpgNo time off for these guys as they hone their skills at Miles College’s 7th Annual Band Camp.  Some of their teachers - the Miles College Purple Marching Band – are going over the fundamentals.

Timotheus Miller/Johns Valley Middle School said, “I’m learning how to play my instrument, different types rudiments, everything you would want to know about music.”

It’s not just about music and marching but these students are getting life lessons during this week long band camp.

Miles College Hires New Band Director

miles2004k.jpgSame college, different director, new direction: Music at Miles College is on a high note, after Alabama Jazz Hall of Famer, Donald “D.C.” Crawford sounded off by signing on to become the new Director of Bands at Miles College.

Mr. Crawford has extended his musical ear, talents and leadership to the Birmingham City School System for well over thirty years. Donald Crawford is a professional musician and author but locally, D.C. is noted for having one of the best high school marching bands in the Southeast. For three decades, Mr. Crawford has been the man behind the music at P.D. Jackson-Olin High School. Now Mr. Crawford is ready to take the field at Miles College. “ I am very excited and grateful for the opportunity. It has always been my dream to become a College Band Director. It will be a refreshing change.”

Mr. Crawford met and listened to his new band members’ musical voices. After the first session, Mr. Crawford and the Purple Marching Machine are perfectly in tune with one another. “I am very impressed with the leadership, maturity and playing ability of the students. I can’t wait to get started!” Laughing excitedly, “Where’s the football schedule?”
