Louisiana Drumline Camp helps kids develop percussion skills
March 5, 2010
By Sheila Stroup, The Times-Picayune
Saturday’s mini-camp for drummers will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sophie B. Wright Charter School, 1426 Napoleon Ave. Drum students from throughout the area are welcome. They should bring drumsticks, a practice pad and drums and cymbals if they have them. To register, contact Raymond Ellison at rock06100@aol.com or call Terence Higgins at 504.905.3394. Cost is $40, and students will receive breakfast, lunch, the Louisiana Drumline Camp workbook, a camp T-shirt and a new pair of drumsticks. There will also be awards and prizes. To learn more about the group, go to www.louisianadrumlinecamp.org.
Imagine 125 kids playing drums and cymbals together. What a loud joyful noise that would be. And that’s what Terence Higgins hopes to hear this weekend.
Higgins and several other accomplished percussion teachers are holding an all-day mini-camp for drummers, ages 8 to 18, on Saturday.
“We want to focus on kids who are already in a band program or have some experience playing the drums,” he says. “We want to make sure they know the fundamentals and then enhance what they know.”
Higgins, 39, who grew up in Algiers and is probably best known as the drummer for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, came up with the idea for the Louisiana Drumline Camp in 2005. He thought it would be a way to show young drummers that music could give them a future.

Krewe of Harambee parade celebrates Mardi Gras, MLK Jr.
January 19, 2010
The Krewe of Harambee had good weather as it kicked off the area Mardi Gras season with its annual Mardi Gras MLK parade held Monday in downtown Shreveport.
The theme this year was Harambee presents Sankofa, which means reflecting on the past while looking to the future, with attorney Jacqueline Scott as the grand marshal.
Anticipation and excitement filled the air as hundreds of people lined up along Milam and Texas streets waiting to see the parade pass through.
After a procession that included firefighters, police officers and ROTC officers, Woodlawn High School’s marching band kicked things off with rousing performance of The Jacksons classic, “Torture.”

Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams Jr. helps with bands at Jackson-Olin High School and Miles College
October 25, 2009

By Carol Robinson — The Birmingham News
By day, Sgt. Johnny Williams Jr. is the voice of the Birmingham Police Department.
But come 5 p.m., he brings on the band.
Williams, a 44-year-old veteran police officer and the department spokesman, spends his off-duty hours choreographing fancy steps and field formations for the bands at Jackson-Olin High School and Miles College.
As a former drum major and baritone player for the Alabama State University Marching Hornets, it’s something that comes naturally for the self-professed "band head."
His wife was a cheerleader at another college, but his son and two daughters play the trumpet.
In addition to his police work week of 40-plus hours, Williams puts in about five hours each weeknight with the two bands plus the weekend games, where he also announces for the Jackson-Olin band.
