According to police, a 17-year-old student at Booker T. Washington High School in Dallas was killed early Friday morning in Austin. He and the school band were on a field trip at the time.

Band in need of $40,000 for an Event

Having found their rhythm and beaten several high schools, Vallejo’s Springstowne Middle School marching band is now seeking $40,000 to compete in a national event.
And band members only have two weeks to raise the money.
The Wildcats have risen to the top of the marching band field in the last two years, winning

Northern California Band Association competitions. Now the band’s 36-member drumline has been invited to the National.
GHASB Free Auxillary Clinic

Martin Luther King High School band gets $75,000 closer to playing in China

DETROIT — The Martin Luther King High School Symphonic and Marching Band got a giant step closer to performing at a pre-Olympics festival in China after receiving a $75,000 gift from three local foundations Wednesday.
The band had already raised $105,000 toward the $250,000 it needs to accept an invitation to play at the festival, which will include music performances, sightseeing, cultural exchanges and a tour of Beijing.
The band is the only one in Michigan invited by Music Celebrations International, an organization that promotes musicianship around the globe, to perform at the event. The organization invited one band from each state to play in China July 1-17.
Florida A&M Director of Bands Honored by American Bandmasters Association

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida A&M University (FAMU) distinguished professor of music, chairman of the Department of Music and director of bands Julian E. White, Ph.D., and the FAMU Symphonic Wind Ensemble were honored at the 2008 American Bandmasters Association (ABA) Convention.
White was awarded the honor for being one of three African Americans in the American Bandmasters Association, and the only African American from a historically black college or university (HBCU). In addition to White making history, FAMU’s Wind Symphonic Ensemble was selected to perform as part of the welcome concert at the University of Miami’s Maurice Gusman Concert Hall, which featured seven nationally renowned composers and conductors.

The last religious rites for South Carolina State student, Michael James Williams, will be held at noon, Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at New Bethel Sounds of Praise Pentecostal Fellowship, Summerville (Jedburg Section), with Bishop Allen H. Simmons, pastor officiating. Interment will be in St. John Baptist Church Cemetery in Ridgeville.

Now it’s the mortification of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick that displaces other news.
An auto supplier who employs hundreds in the city, he has lost patience with the public melodrama, the spectacle of the city’s highest official as a distraction.
Like many others, he is waiting, or maybe just wishing, for the mayor to step down, to avoid dragging the city through a prolonged and public legal travail.
“It’s extremely damaging, bringing negative attention when we’re already down,” says Michael Layne, a Farmington Hills public relations executive, who knows a PR disaster when he sees one.

What made me attend an HBCU? Marching band!
Ever since I was a young boy growing up in Chicago, I have been in love with music. I was in the fifth grade when my love found a direction; I joined my school’s band program.
Now, as a senior at Central State University, my love for music is no weaker. Through my membership with the Invincible Marching Marauders, I have been pushed to a standard I was unaware I could reach.
