Memorial Day: Family remembers Sgt. Edmond Randle, Fallen member of FAMU’s Marching 100

A soldier’s life, a mother’s pain
Source: Miami Herald
His family called him Dakie (pronounced DAY-kee).
He was close to both his mother and father, although they divorced when he was a boy. Dakie was an average student at Miami Central High School and a master trumpet player. He loved Michael Jordan sneakers, listening to Barry White and playing Grand Theft Auto, and he had a hard time choosing between two girls who said they loved him.
”He wasn’t the type you’d see on the street,” Karla said. “He only got into one fight growing up.”
He never played with G.I. Joe toy soldiers or had a penchant for watching Saving Private Ryan. He chose band over ROTC.
He earned a music scholarship to attend Florida A&M, played with its famous Marching 100 band, and won special honors. But with the independence of living away from home came the unpalatable consequences of choice.
