In a historic first, The Alcorn State University’s Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite marching band has been selected to perform in the 2025 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®. This marks a significant milestone for both the university and its celebrated marching band program, as they take the national stage in one of America’s most beloved holiday traditions. Representing their state and the broader HBCU community, the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite will showcase their talent and spirit to millions of viewers in New York City and across the country.
Chosen from over 100 applicants, Alcorn State’s band impressed the Macy’s Parade Band Committee with their dynamic performances and musical expertise. Known for their high-energy routines, precise formations, and soulful sounds, the band was selected as one of only nine to march in the 99th edition of the annual parade. “Macy’s is thrilled to invite the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite to join us for the 2025 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” said Sara Flores, associate producer of the parade, highlighting the band’s captivating performance during the selection process.
HBCU bands, including Alcorn State’s, have long been recognized for their ability to blend music with entertainment, creating a unique and unforgettable experience. The Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite have consistently demonstrated their excellence on the field, and their inclusion in the Macy’s parade is a testament to the cultural and musical impact HBCU bands continue to have. This opportunity allows them to not only represent their university but to proudly carry the banner for HBCU band culture on a global stage.
As the band prepares for their appearance in the parade, they will be undertaking extensive rehearsals and engaging in fundraising efforts to ensure their performance in New York is one to remember. Macy’s helped kickstart these efforts with a $10,000 donation, but the journey will require the support of the community to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The next 18 months will see the band and the university community come together to raise funds and prepare for this monumental event.
The Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite’s upcoming performance is not just a moment of pride for Alcorn State University, but for the entire HBCU community. Their participation in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade reflects the rich legacy of HBCU marching bands, whose performances are as much about culture and tradition as they are about music. As the world tunes in next Thanksgiving, the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite will bring that legacy to life, reminding everyone of the powerful impact HBCU bands continue to have in shaping American music and culture.
